Ronald S. Flagg to Speak at Appalachian School of Law Commencement
Appalachian School of Law (“ASL”) is pleased to announce that Ronald Flagg will deliver the commencement address to the 2023 graduating class.
Previously a litigation partner at Sidley Austin LLP, Flagg currently serves as the President of the Legal Services Corporation. His three decades of experience include serving as President of the District of Columbia Bar, Chair of the D.C. Bar’s Pro Bono Task Force, board member of the D.C. Bar Foundation, Chair of the Board of the National Veterans Legal Services Program, Chair of the District of Columbia Bar Pro Bono Center, Chair of the Board of the AARP Legal Counsel for the Elderly, a member of the American Bar Association’s House of Delegates, board member of the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, and member of the District of Columbia Judicial Nomination Commission.
Flagg’s passion for closing the justice gap perfectly aligns with ASL’s mission statement. Our law school is committed to providing students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in a variety of legal careers, including those that serve the needs of communities like those in Central Appalachia. The approximate ratio of lawyers to Central Appalachian residents (1 to 742) is dramatically less than the average in Virginia at large (1 to 294). As our Board Chairman, a former Attorney General of Virginia, has said: “Our law school is more interested in graduating ‘Main Street’ lawyers than ‘Wall Street’ lawyers.”
We are delighted that Flagg will be sharing his knowledge, wisdom, and experience with ASL’s 2023 graduating class. The commencement ceremony will take place on May 13, 2023 in Grundy, Virginia.
