Susan Page to Moderate ASL Virginia Gubernatorial Debate — September 16

Appalachian School of Law will host the Commonwealth of Virginia’s first gubernatorial debate between Democrat candidate Terry McAuliffe and Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin, the same office first held by Patrick Henry and then by Thomas Jefferson.

The hour-long contest — set to begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, September 16 — will be moderated by Susan Page, a nationally acclaimed journalist and the Washington Bureau Chief of USA Today.  Page has covered eleven U.S. presidential elections, interviewed each of the past 10 presidents, and earned every journalism award related to coverage of the presidency.  Her unrivaled experience in White House coverage makes her an ideal moderator of a debate between candidates seeking the Virginia Governor’s Mansion.

Page will be joined by panelists Dr. Bob Holsworth and Candace Burns. These well-known Virginians will work with Page to decide topic areas for the debate and to draft specific questions that will be posed to the candidates for the first time during the debate. 

Dr. Holsworth is a leading political analyst in Virginia, a regular commentator for WTVR CBS6 in Richmond, and the Founding Director of the Center for Public Policy and the Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University.  Candace Burns is an anchor for CBS6 News and an Emmy award-winning journalist.  She was recently named a “Women History Maker Under 40” by the Commonwealth Virginia Chapter of Links Incorporated.

McAuliffe and Youngkin will square off in ASL’s moot courtroom.  Given the size of the venue and COVID considerations, a limited number of tickets will be issued to members of the ASL and local communities.  The event will be broadcast on several networks throughout the Commonwealth and the Nation.  Additionally, the event will be live-streamed on ASL’s YouTube channel and other internet platforms.  More information on where to watch the debate will be available in the coming week.
