Second Year Summer Internship Program
| General Description: | This component of the Appalachian School of Law’s externship program provides summer internships for second year students, with a classroom component beginning in the spring semester. The Second Year Internship Program gives students the opportunity to gain legal experience in one of three distinct areas of the law: (1) Natural Resources and Environmental Law, (2) the Judiciary, and (3) Administrative Law. An internship enables selected second year students to apply the theories and skills gained in the classroom at “premier sites.” |

| Students Enrolled: | These competitive internships are available for a limited number of students. |
| Supervision: | Externship Director; 1 Faculty Supervisor |
| Number of Sites: | Varies each year |
| Site Limitations: | Compliance with ASL’s minimum requirements for site placements, as well as ABA Standard 305 and U.S. Department of Labor Fact Sheet #71 (April 2010).
A Stipend may be available through the site or school for the student’s travel and/or living expenses, depending upon availability. |
| Coursework: | Mandatory attendance at orientation class, online lectures and live guest presentations during the Spring Semester of the student’s second year. |
| Prerequisites: | The student must complete an application process and meet or exceed ASL’s competitive enrollment requirements. |
| Placement Hours: | 200 Hours unless the site requires more. |
| Other Requirements: | Weekly Time Sheets; Weekly Journals; Substantial Writing; Debriefing. |
| Grade: | The grade is pass/fail based on the evaluation of the site supervisor and the Externship Director. The grade will comply with ASL Academic Standards IX (B)(1) and (3). |
